Expert Mode

Some advanced settings and features are only visible in expert mode. It is disabled by default to not drown new users in to much functions (which are often not yet needed in the beginng of editing with JOSM) and to protect him from doing "wrong" things.

Activating the expert mode

It can be switched like this:

View > Expert Mode

or

Edit > Preferences... > Checkbox Expert mode at the bottom left.

Prior to version 4840:

Edit > Preferences... > Top-most button on the left ( Display Settings) > Look and Feel > Expert mode

Features that are hidden unless expert mode is enabled

The following feature are not visible when the Expert mode is not enabled (list is probably incomplete):

• Actions:
  • Convert to GPX layer
  • Add selection to relation
  • resolve all selected conflicts to my/their versions in context menu of Conflict List Dialog
  • Encourage/discourage upload in Data layer context menu
• File menu:
  • Save Session As ...
  • Export to GPX ...
  • Download from Overpass API
  • Close open changesets
• Edit menu:
  • Purge
• View menu:
  • Viewport Following
  • Jump To Position
• Tools menu:
  • Mirror
  • Follow Line
  • Add Node...

• Edit modes:
  • Delete mode
  • Parallel way mode
  • Extrude mode
  • Improve way accuracy mode
• Toggle Dialogs:
  • Changeset List Dialog
• Windows:
  • Search > some functions and examples
  • Relation Editor > the function "Sort the currently selected members and all members below"
  • The reuse history window when using the Split way Action
• Preferences:
  • Display Settings > GPS Points - various options
  • Display Settings > OSM Data - Options that affect drawing performance
  • Display Settings > Look and Feel - some options
