Selecting, editing overlapping ways

Description
JOSM does not really help you when you want to select a way which is completely overlapped by another way (they both use the same nodes, and one way is a subset of the other). The only way to select it is to use select-area tool and then choose the way from the list of selected objects. But even if you have it selected, you cannot delete it, since the delete tool does not work on selections - instead you have to click on the way, which off course deletes the other way, not the one you want.

CTRL+middle click doesn't do anything here. Just middle click show a list of ways, but doesn't help otherwise. Honestly, this is a big problem when editing areas with lots of overlapping ways. I don't agree with the changes in priority/type.

How does JOSM currently chose which way to select when clicking on overlying ways? According to Murphy it always choses the wrong one. Why not have that (crtl-click)-Box when clicking on multiple ways by default? That will save a lot of time.

Fixed since some time:
Delete tool and also delete key delete current selection.
Isn't this possible using the awkward CTRL+middle click selection routine? I agree there must be an altogether easier, more obvious way to do it though!
