Description
Would like to suggest the addition of the reference field to the residential road dialog as its in all other road dialogs and i'm having to add it manually with the add/edit dialog.

According to < http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Tag:highway=residential > a residential road is a 'street or road generally used only by people that live on that road or roads that branch off it' and in residential areas in the Emirates and Qatar, these roads have numbers and sometimes names. You can see this in the 'Al Twar 2', 'Al Twar 3', 'Al Qusais 2' and 'Al Qusais 3' suburbs at < http://www.openstreetmap.org/#map=15/25.2603/55.3889 > which i have recently done and its a hassle not having a reference entry in the dialog.

Mmh in your case of using ref=*
for a highway, I would rather add the name/number as name=*
and not as ref=*
. I have to admit that in OSM so far ref=*
seems to be a special case with rail-/highways where it is used for the route that is running along.
Your way of tagging leads to some problems:
- people still add an name (see "Street *" in above area)
- software has to use a lot more casing/filtering to proper interpret/find
ref=*
,name=*
andaddr:street=*
Call this tagging for consistency.

In 6477/josm:
I am not sure if this will lead to more usage of improper "highway=residential" for connecting roads with ref=*
but the numbers for ref in combination with highway=residential
on taginfo seem to be quite low in general and really low compared to other values of highway=*
above residential:
- http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/ref#combinations
- http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/highway#values
- http://taginfo.openstreetmap.org/keys/highway#combinations
I am not sure if it is good to support tags which are only useful in some areas and ambiguous in the rest of the world.
A solution would be a preset feature to allow replacing some internal preset items with customized ones or/and support to add some custom lines to an internal preset item. This way it would be easy to have presets for countries and own habits

Residential roads usually do not have
ref
, this is intentional. What road is it ? I am not sure
residential
is the right value you should use. If there's aref
, I think the road should be instead tagged ashighway=tertiary
+abutters=residential
.
