Error when opening compressed OSM file (could not read file)

Description
Downloaded planet-100210.osm.bz2 and tried to open it in JOSM and got an error:
Could not read file 'planet-100210.osm.bz2'.
Error is:
XML document structures must start and end within the same entity.
What did I do wrong? It took 7 hours to download this file so I hope it's not somehow corrupt and I have to download it again! I used DownThemAll in Firefox 3.6 and downloaded the file from http://ftp5.gwdg.de/pub/misc/openstreetmap/planet.openstreetmap.org/planet-100210.osm.bz2 I'm using JOSM Version 2561.
I should note: When I came to my computer 7 hours later it didn't say the download was finished it said it timed out but I hit resume and then it finished. Don't know if that corrupted it somehow but I hope not! I attached a screenshot of the error message dialog window.

My best guess is that the the file *is* actually corruped and that JOSM correctly refused to load it. You'll have to download it again.

Anyway, I doubt you can open a file that large in JOSM. You can try to use planet extracts (one country) or use tools that can handle these amounts of data.

Anyway, I doubt you can open a file that large in JOSM. You can try to use planet extracts (one country) or use tools that can handle these amounts of data.
Thanks for your help! What tools can handle these amounts of data? I was under the impression JOSM could because it was the JOSM program that told me I should get the planet.osm file if I wanted to load a larger area than what I was going for! (In a dialog window).
But anyway if you're sure it can't load it, then please tell me what tools will open a file this big? And also where would I find planet country extracts (on that ftp site I linked to, I didn't see any countries or anything)? Also, would the whole amount of data have to load to RAM, because if so then I can't open it anyway because my system only has 2GB and this file is 7.91GB, or does it load as a direct-from-disk kinda method?
I'm not sure what to do about action, I don't want my comment to go unnoticed so I'm going to reopen this, if that's unnecessary then let me know and next time I leave a comment (if I need to) I'll leave it closed ;) thanks!

JOSM does not load the whole file into memory, but one way or another it won't work! The wiki page is a good start:
I have to warn you however, processing the planet.org takes a lot of time and resources. The extracts are easier to handle, but still pretty big. Smaller extracts can be opened in JOSM.
