Description
What steps will reproduce the problem?
- The issue appears randomly after JOSM has been open for a while (hours/days), I don't know of any specific steps to reproduce it.
What is the expected result?
I can continue to use the mouse normally.
What happens instead?
Many mouse clicks are not registered, making it impossible to use JOSM. Sometimes it also appears as if clicks are registered in a wrong location or as if the mouse button is kept pressed when it isn't. See this screencast: https://youtu.be/a2C_lXTIsQI (This is with version 17919, but this issue was already occurring before that).
Please provide any additional information below. Attach a screenshot if possible.
The issue is solved by a restart of my computer, but not by a restart of JOSM. I don't have any unusual mouse behaviour in any other application.

Plain X. sudo swapoff -a; sudo swapon -a did not help. It is possible that I ran out of memory at some point before the issue started.

If JOSM needs more memory than assigned you should get a warning dialog. Turning swap off, and on again, should do the trick if you had run out of physical memory, before.
What graphic device do you have, especially, does it have own memory or is it sharing main memory?
You could try to delete layers, like imagery or validator, and remove loaded geoimages or the complete layer. Deactivating mappaint styles might help, too.
Please, also try if it occurs without any additional stuff like plugins, external presets/styles/validator rules. See Help/CommandLineOptions for an option to set new and empty preferences.
In the end it might be a hardware problem or some underlying software.

Ok, no, I didn't get any memory warnings.
I have a XPS 13 9370 laptop with an integrated Intel UHD 620 GPU.
I started JOSM with josm --reset-preferences to get the default settings and still have the same behaviour, even when no data, imagery or anything is loaded.
Additionally, an exception occurred when going to the plugins tab in the preferences. This might just be from my mouse doing something unexpected, I can't reproduce it now, but attaching the report here anyway in case there is something useful:

Yes, that error occurred before clearing the preferences, sorry I didn't clarify that. But the mouse issues are the same without any custom parts:

Thanks a lot for your help anyway! I normally use an external mouse, but it's the same with the trackpad.

The tool I used to visualise the mouse clicks in the screencast told me to install Java 14, that's why the version in the first status report was different. I upgraded to 16 now, still no change.

These disappeared after the Java update...

Lets face it. We need to find the differences between your setup and the "common" system setup.
- Try purging all java versions and only reinstall one version, afterwards. Best would be an official Ubuntu package like version 11, 16 or 17 and not a local build.
- Uninstalling
libatk-wrapper-javapackage is another option as it is not needed forjosm.jarand we had problems with this package before. - Can you try another advanced software using java runtime.
Still, the problem could be within the mouse driver (kernel module) and your xserver configuration which is out of the scope of JOSM.

The issue disappeared the next day after waking up from suspend, so I couldn't test further, but has now appeared again. But I have the same behaviour in Android Studio, so it looks like the problem is with my system not JOSM and you can close this issue.

Sounds more like a driver issue with kernel modules or Xserver.

Well, you could try if changing to the console Ctrl+Alt+F3 and back to X (Ctrl+Alt+F2 I hope or Ctrl+Alt+F7) helps. Unloading and reloading kernel driver modules could work and give you more information.
Did you try it with a different user account and/or different display manager or different desktop environment?
