Erratic geotagged image zooming on Mac

"Geotagged Images" window zooming on a Mac works very erratic with the trackpad.
It works OK with a mousewheel on an external mouse.

With the trackpad, dragging with two fingers up (to zoom in) or down (to zoom out) has the following behaviour, sequentially illustrated in the attached video.

• First attempting to zoom in a little bit makes it zoom to max.
• Attempting to zoom out a little bit makes it briefly flicker on a bit higher zoom, then jump back to the max zoom.
• Zooming out a lot makes it zoom out - but if the cursor is left on the image window, it jumps back to the max zoom.
• Zooming out a lot and immediately moving cursor away from the image window makes it stay at the zoomed out state.
