Description
The table cell based editing of attributes is a click-marathon mess.
Copy and pasting plain text key-value pairs is much more convenient than he existing means of cpying multiple kv pairs.

That works, great.
I didn't try, admittedly, to past into the void, with an object selected, but without any UI widget selected. Deems quite counterintuitive or a not easy to discover functionality. I tried clicking every are square-mm of the "Tags / Membership" panel, the input element there (whose function I have not researched yet (search? edit? single item, multiple-k=v-items?), as it will require trial-and-error discovery), and added value cells. To no avail.
While it certainly provides added value to be able to paste into multiple objects at once (if I understand correctly), it misses easy editing of just pasted (and thus appended, not merged) key=value pairs using simple text editor keystrokes. iD-Editor does it right if you toggle the properties display from "list" to "text".

Think the action you are looking for is Paste Tags. This action could be offered in the context menu of the Tags/Membership panel.

Did you try it?
I can use copy on a string like
highway=residential
, select one or more objects, and use Ctrl+V to paste. If that doesn't help please describe more precisely what you are missing.
