#19322 closed enhancement (worksforme)

How to automatically load map or a dragged *.gpx file?

Description

I dragged a *.gpx file onto JOSM-Editor.

The Track is accepted but it does not show the underlying map but only the pink track (see attached snapshot).

How do I tell JOSM to automatically load the corresponding map?

Thank you
Peter

Just select one or more background images in the Imegary menu.

If you just want to look at a map you can enable e.g. OpenStreetMap Carto from the Imagery menu.
If you want to edit openstreetmap data you need to download the data, e.g. via menu File -> Download data or right click you gpx file in the layer list top right and choose "Download from OSM along this Track".

Ok, thank you.

But is there a way to AUTOMATICALLY load the "OpenStreetMap Carto" every time I drag a .gpx file?

Currently I always have to do this manually

I don't know any method to automatically open the wanted layer if JOSM is already running.
Maybe this helps?
You can create a script that opens JOSM with the wanted layer. Do this:

  • Start JOSM and open the wanted layer, e.g. "OpenStreetMap Carto".
  • Save the session (File-> Save Session as) e.g. in file josm-gpx.jos
  • Create a script that starts JOSM with this file as first parameter.

When you start that script JOSM will open the "OpenStreetMap Carto" layer automatically.
I've tried that on a Windows system, I am pretty sure it also works on others.

@GerdP:

Thank you for your workaround suggestion.
However it is disappointing.

Auto-load of the corresponding maps should be a basic function for a GPX-Viewer.

When I load frequently gpx-tracks I am always forced to click multiple times until the map is shown.
This tedious and very user unfriendly.

Tracks without maps are useless like cars without tires.
I urgently suggest to implement this feature.

Thank you again for help

Well, JOSM is not a GPX-Viewer. It's main function is to allow editing OSM data, and for that you normally don't need nor want a map as a background.
Maybe you should try other programs if you just want to view GPX files?

Replying to pstein:

You need to activate the map backgound only once, then it automatically loads the map wherever you move the map view or drag in new gpx files.

The carto servers have some performance problems lately so some tiles may take long to load or even fail to load. You may try another background map. JOSM has a large selection (wiki:Help/Preferences/Imagery).

As this is the JOSM bug tracker please ask question about how to use JOSM in one of these places:

or use wiki:Help, osmwiki:JOSM or other sources (youtube,...)
