#1579 closed defect (fixed)

landuse:farmland or landuse:farm?

Reported by: florian.schmitt@… Owned by: anonymous
Priority: minor Milestone:
Component: Internal preset Version: latest
Keywords: preset; landuse; farm; farmland Cc: ronny.standtke@…, landwirt@…

Description

The presets have two landuse entries regarding farms: farmyard and farmland. farmland was introduced with changeset 666 (what a number :-) ), but it doesn't appear on the map features list, and the renderers don't recognize it; they prefer landuse=farm. Wouldn't it be better to revert the change and offer farm besides farmyard?

Keywords: preset landuse farm farmland → preset;landuse;farm;farmland

I saw this lately, but I'm tempted to not care too much about render engines; at the contrary: spread the best use you can think of, is what I've learned inside the OSM community.

I'd have seconded the use of farmyard + farmland following the quit straight explanation given in the OSM-Wiki. But after reading the vineyard-proposal I was convinced to go even further and support the suggestion of using landuse=agriculture,produce=[vine|..].

The benefit of using JOSM with presets for generic farm, vineyard, etc. would be, to have the respective defaults pre-filled to a (landuse) form.

At least for german mappers, landuse=farm has been ambiguous. That's why farmland has been introduced.

I'm not sure if we should revert that to farm only. Comments welcome.

the renderers don't recognize it

Not true any longer for Osmarender. I bet, we'll see support (most probably for both farm and farmland) in Mapnik as well, if only there are enough uses in OSM. So I'll stick with tagging farmland, with or without JOSM preset. Well, I'm a German. :-)

landuse=farmland is still only a proposal, whereas landuse=farm (which has its own tag descriptions in English and German, is present on Map Features and has 10 times as many uses as landuse=farmland, despite the JOSM preset) is now clearly defined as meaning farmland -- as opposed to farmyard. I'd suggest that JOSM presets should be modified to match wiki documentation.

I totaly agree. Even worse is that validator reports landuse=farm as invalid.

Any news for this or can we close it?

sorry, as far as i see the presets still list farmyard/farmland, not farmyard/farm. I still think farm would be the preferable preset.

Im using josm version 2255 and it uses farmland as the preset which is confusing since the wiki clearly tells to use farm. I'm towards using just farm. Has anybody any news?

IIRC, the situation "before 666" was: only landuse=farm existed in map features, that meant both the farmland and the farmyard. To make a distinction between the two, both tags were added in the presets. farm wasn't used in the presets, as you couldn't simply distinguish what it would have meant: the "old" (both) or probably the more specific "new" (only the farmland) meaning.

I don't know if it's wide practise today to *not* tag farm any longer in the "old" sense where it could mean both. I also don't know how many "old" meanings of farm are still in the database. The sheer numbers unfortunately just can't tell you this.

I'd say this bug can be closed. Presets use farmland and farmyard which is common practise by now, "landuse=farm" is considered being "burned".

Rendering both works fine. Some people even complain about. :)

I think this should be sorted out finally. As farmland seems to be prevailing now, why don't we change the wiki now? Can I delete the entry for "farm"? I am not sure if this matter requires a vote? -HQQ

This is not the right place. Please, discuss this on the mailing lists.
Deleting is propably wrong but marking it as deprecated and linking to the new tags should work.
