text halo is not smooth

The text halo is kind of "ragged". Sometimes there are even holes in the halo. Here are some examples:

text-size 12 with halo-radius 3:

This is also a problem for the new text halo on residentials in default paint style:

I don't think I've seen this before. Could you add a status report and try to increase the font size and halo-radius further, so one can see what is going on?

I can reproduce but cannot figure why it happens:
