JOSM takes much longer now to prepare downloaded data. maybe there's some potential for improvement there.

I was able to reduce processing time on a test sample from 16 seconds to 2 seconds by commenting out date parsing on input. I decided to keep the date as string internally, and only parse it when it is really required (=seldom).
